RWD Turns 1! Top 5 Learnings Since Starting a Business.

While I would love for success to happen overnight, that is absolutely not the case. It's been a year since the registration and initiating the launch of my business Running World Designs. Although the journey thus far has been enjoyable there have also been some growing pains along the way. I've narrowed it down to the top 5 things I would share with anyone interested in growing a business or already heavily engaged in their brand. Are you ready to hear it? Here we go!

First things first, invest in yourself and developing your business.

I don't know about you, but I've heard a lot about tax write-offs and business expenses leveraging your tax deductions. At first, it seemed like fancy accountant jargon and gibberish. Then I filed my taxes and it all made sense. Marketing and promotion materials, project supplies, packaging and shipment costs. In addition to, meals, entertainment and travel expenses related to your business. So beneficial!

Now this concept of investment extends further than monetary gains. It also consists of mental growth and continued learning of your craft. Are you reading the right reviews? Subscribed to the best articles and magazines? Attending influential conferencing to hone your skills? All thoughts to be considered while growing yourself and your business, it's just a bonus that these learning opportunities can be written off as well. *Disclaimer: see a professional accountant or mentor for specific financial advice.*

Next, there will be instances of feeling lackluster and uninspired.

Admittedly, I was not the type to hit the ground running with a concrete business plan and headstrong direction and strategy. I was more interested in defining my goals of a business vs simply being a hobby. Considering I am still in a position of 9-5 employment & a full-time mom who loves alone time equally. I often came up against guilt and neglect when not prioritizing my business sometimes vice versa, time spent with my kid. Drained from the demands of daily routines and uninspired to pour into my brand. Or, lackluster from the mundane familiarity of my comfort zone. This is usually the time I remember my purpose for starting and plan some travel and activities to spark some rejuvenation outside of what I'm used to and generate some next level creativity.

The only way to counter that? Consistency!

No matter the frequency, regardless the pace consistently produce content for your product or service. Something is better than nothing and you will begin to get into a rhythm that works well for you. It's sort of like self-care, make time for what matters most. Yourself and your business with a healthy mix of moments and memories for you and your loved ones. Think of it as the substance you are made of, the textures of everything that contributes to the success of your business and your continued happiness and growth. Repeat those processes and tendencies consistently! Not sure what that looks like for you? Reflection and awareness go a long way!

Once you've attempted to master consistency, Persist & Persevere.

Ok, you've got your rhythm and you're in your groove. All of a sudden BOOM! The odds seem to no longer be in your favor, it's alright, stay forward focused. Remember why you started, reflect on your success and wins and repeat! Continue firmly with the mindset that you are enough and your only option is to succeed despite opposition and difficulties. Commit to not quitting and understand that detours are just an alternate route for achieving what is meant for you, the outcome is often better than expected.

Most importantly, Keep Going!

If it was all good just a week ago, try to recall why. If you're feeling in a jam or in a tough spot, here are a few questions to jot down and note the first creative thoughts that come to mind:

  • What was so exciting or most influential?

  • How can you incorporate that into your daily living?

  • Was your time with family well spent?

  • Did you spend within budget?

  • Have you invested in yourself and your business?

You may find it helpful to use the answer to these questions as a tangible way to guide yourself and your business.

Wishing you continued success.
